The Evangeline Project:

Evangeline’s Trail in Evangeline Parish by 2011

Evangeline Tourism Association

.

Evangeline Parish is named for the heroine of one of America’s most famous poems, Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie.  Created in 1847, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who has been called “America’s greatest popular poet”, Evangeline became not only America’s most popular heroine but also an icon for many Acadians living in Louisiana today.  Almost one hundred years ago the founding fathers of Evangeline Parish responded to the popularity of Longfellow’s poem by using this most recognizable of names for the new parish they would fight to establish in 1911. This project, Evangeline’s Trail in Evangeline Parish, proposes to recognize those founding fathers who connected us forever to this most famous of literary icons and also to  bring a representation of Evangeline to Evangeline Parish in a form that rises to the status of a national monument. Nova Scotia, Canada, Madawaska, Maine, Nantes, France and St. Martinville, Louisiana, to name a few, are all places that have successfully identified with the mystique of the Evangeline legend

Our Founding Fathers:  Paulin Fontenot (Sheriff), Wm. “Billy” Clark (Treasurer), Ernest Etienne Ortego (Supt. of Schools), Adraste Lafleur (Assessor), Dr. Armand Lafleur (Coroner), Olivrel Eves Guillory (Clerk of Court), Yves L. Fontenot (State Representative), Charles H. Pucheu (Registrar of Voters), Dr. Jules Vidrine (School Board President), B.S. Dossman (Police Juror, Pres), Ursin Fruge (Police Juror), Willaim Gaty (Police Juror), Harvey Campbell (Police Juror), Alfred Young (Police Juror), Ursin Fruge (Police Juror), Hosea Currie (Police Jury Clerk), and Rene L. DeRouen (US Representative).

To commemorate this historical event we are working to bring

a life-size, bronze statue of Evangeline to Evangeline Parish.

We are funding this project by the sale of Commemorative Bricks. By purchasing a Commemorative Brick you are ensuring that your family name is remembered forevermore and that you will forever be recognized as playing a part in bringing a life-size, bronze statue of “Our Evangeline” to Evangeline Parish for its historical Centennial.
